Chevy Coolant
How to Check Coolant Levels
What is coolant and why is it so important for your car? Your Chevy’s coolant is a fluid that regulates the temperate of your engine as you travel through East Hills. It’s designed to handle extreme temperatures without compromising, so it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Because it’s so vital to your car’s performance on the Bayside roads, learning how to check your coolant levels is an important part of at-home maintenance. Let’s find out how to take care of your coolant properly with Major World, and get more service tips with us in Long Island City!
How Do I Check My Coolant at Home?
You can always have your technician take a look under the hood, but learning how to check your coolant level is not difficult at all. Here are the steps to follow:
- Pop the hood of your car. Make sure that the engine has cooled completely.
- Look for the coolant reservoir. Check your owner’s manual for a guide.
- The side of the reservoir will contain markings, including one marked “Full.”
- If your fluid level reaches the “Full” marking, you’re all set to go.
- If your fluid level does not reach the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more coolant.
To add more coolant, open up the radiator cap and add the coolant. Your coolant may be premixed or you may have to mix it with water. This is also a great time to check the hoses connected to the radiator for any damage or leaks.
When Should I See a Service Technician?
When you look at your coolant, take note if it looks normal or a little out of the ordinary. Coolant is thicker than water, but thinner than oil. So if your coolant looks more like a sludge, it’s important to visit the service center. This means that your coolant has been contaminated, and it’s likely the result of an internal gasket leak. You can drive to the service center, but we don’t recommend going anywhere else around Forest Hills. The coolant may leak, causing the engine to overheat.
What Color is Coolant?
Chevy coolant comes in a variety of colors. Your coolant might be blue, green, yellow, or red. But if your coolant becomes brown or colorless, it indicates that something is off. You’ll want to flush the system and replace the coolant, so your car is back in good working order.
